Tami Herzog, a 1982 Elma High School Graduate and a Montesano High School Counselor, has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer and Bone Marrow Cancer. In honor of Tami and others who are in need of a stem cell transplant, Montesano's FFCLA will be partnering with Elma's FFA to put on a Be The Match at this year's Monte vs. Elma rival football game October 27th.

Every 32 Minutes Program

On Wednesday, April 12th & Thursday, April 13th, Montesano Jr/Sr High School will be participating in the Every 32 Minutes program.

The Every 32 Minutes program is widely used among law enforcement in addressing reducing teen driving fatality and serious injury.   The Region 2 Target Zero Task Force partner with emergency responders including law, fire, aid, prosecutors, coroners, Airlift Northwest, substance prevention and 911 to bring students a firsthand look at fatality collisions.  The national statistic is every 32 minutes someone is killed by an impaired driver.  

Every 32 minutes a dispatch will go over the all school intercom of an accident involving one of the preselected students who are representing victims of traffic fatalities.  A sibling or best friend of the “victim” reads an obituary they have written live over the intercom.   Meanwhile, in the classroom paramedics place the fatal student on a stretcher and covered with a white sheet.  The student is taken to a staging area and will not return to class or have access to cell phone or social media.  This continues every 32 minutes all day.  During the day a large scale mock crash will occur outside with a massive emergency response including a Airlift helicopter.  Some families will receive a visit from law enforcement and go through what would happen had their student actually been involved in a fatal accident. 

The program is completed with an all school assembly that the parents are invited to attend.  Parents speak about what that death notification was like, students speak about the experience, and real victims speak about how their lives are forever changed.  Professionals speak on how to make better choices and law enforcement speaks on consequences.  Data shows us this program is highly effective at reducing serious injury and fatal collisions in youth.  The average reduction we experience is up to 65%.  The timing of this event is during the peak season with prom, graduation, and summer months. 

Choir Concert 3/7 Canceled

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Choir concert scheduled for Tuesday, March 7th has been canceled.  We will reschedule this event at a later date.

Montesano Jr/Sr High School named 2016 School of Distinction

Congratulations to the staff and students of Montesano for their hard work this year. We have been named a 2016 School of Distinction for continued improvement in Math and ELA scores over the last five years.  This distinction is awarded by the following organizations: 

Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD), Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP), Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA), Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (WSASCD) and Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA).  They acknowledge the great work benefitting student learning and achievement.

Congratulations again to the staff and students of MHS for their efforts and achievements.

Washington State 2016 Healthy Youth Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our district is participating in the Washington State 2016 Healthy Youth Survey during the weeks of October 10th – 21st.

The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, risk and protective factors, access to school-based services, and sexual behaviors, abuse and orientation. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.

The Healthy Youth Survey is given to students in grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 across Washington State.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students’ answers are anonymous.

Washington Business Week

A unique program is returning to Montesano High School  February 22-26 for our junior students. For one full and exciting week, junior students and some faculty members will be engaged in a non-traditional discovery learning experience called Washington Business Week.  

Small “companies” of students will operate their own business for eight virtual quarters, solving the problems small businesses encounter with growth, production, and demand.  Through our hands-on approach, students will gain a vision of how math, science, English, technology, history, art and other curriculum will apply to their life after high school.  In turn, they may be more inclined to excel in these subjects once they have actually applied them to these “real life” situations.

A businessperson from the Grays Harbor area will mentor each student company as they move to compete against the other student companies.  Competitions include a business simulation, a marketing and stockholder’s presentation and a Trade Show.  By the fifth day, Friday afternoon, each student will have:

·         A real world understanding of business and America’s free enterprise system;

·         An appreciation of how to apply what they learn in school to the “real world” workplace;

·         Improved leadership and teamwork skills - - making each student a better Montesano team player and a better future employee and/or employer;

·         An enhanced understanding of the importance of a diverse workforce; and

·         Increased self-confidence.

The Montesano School District and the Kelsey Foundation have joined forces to make this exceptional experience possible.  The success of the Business Week program depends heavily on strong community support.   Your help is needed to make the program an overall success and to help your student get the most from this great opportunity.  Suggestions for your help include:

·         Talking with your student about their experiences at the end of the day and encourage them to take an active part in all of the activities;

·         Volunteering to be a Company Advisor for a team of students or a Judge of the student projects at the end of the week; and/or

·         Making a donation to support the program budget.

2015-2016 Food Bowl Schedule of Events

The Food Bowl season has arrived. Once again, Montesano High School is competing against Elma High School to see which school can raise the most money and food to support our local food banks. Food Bowl begins Friday, December 4 and ends Tuesday, December 15.

Even more than last year, the need for food in our community is at an all-time high. Any support you are willing to give is greatly appreciated. Monetary donations allow the food bank to buy food at a lower cost.  It’s also more advantageous in the competition because each dollar is worth two pounds.  Your support of this worthy community event is very much appreciated.

Montesano Jr/Sr High School Open House & Free Flu Shots

Open House at Montesano Jr/Sr High School will be on Wednesday, September 16 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  We encourage you all to come in and meet the teachers and to ask any questions you may have.

During the open house, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, flu shots will be available for free to anyone age 12 and older with proof of the following insurance policies:  Premera Blue Cross, Premera, Group Health, Lifewise, Health Net and Medicare.  The nurse is not contracted to take any state insurance (Apple).  You must bring a either a copy of your insurance card or the card.  Medicare cards are required, no copies.  Please bring ID as well.

For those who do not have any of the above referenced insurance policies, the cost is $30.  Only checks and cash accepted.

If students come without a parent, they will need to have a completed permission form (see link below to print) in order to receive a shot.  All students under 18 must have a form, even without a parent present.

About the Smarter Balanced Practice and Training Tests

Some students may have difficulty with some of the content aligned to higher grades within the grade level/subject range of each training test; nevertheless, this should not interfere with students’ ability to interact with an item for its intended training purpose. If an item appears to be too difficult, encourage students to experiment with the tools, choose the best answer and move on to the next item.

Food Bowl Totals

Congratulations to the students and staff at Montesano for their tremendous efforts in raising food and money for the 2014 Food Bowl. Monte kids with the support of our community raised 14,940 pounds in food and $33,337.51 in money that goes directly to the food bank in Montesano. 

Without the hard work from our students and the support of the community this would never be possible. I am well aware of how activities like Food Bowl take away from instruction in the classroom. Sometimes the lessons that stay us the longest are not those learned in a book.
